A Weslaco man will spend the next 10 years in prison in a straw gun purchasing scheme that put dozens of U.S.-sold firearms into the hands of Mexican drug cartels.
Federal prosecutors say 37-year-old Jose Angel Hinojosa Jr., for six years, had been fraudulently buying firearms from an online gun broker. He then arranged for the guns to be smuggled into Mexico. During law enforcement operations against cartels, prosecutors say authorities were able to connect many of the guns that were seized to Hinojosa.
Also during their investigation into Hinojosa, authorities found several child pornography videos on his cellphone. Hinojosa had pleaded guilty to the gun and child porn charges in January.
