President Trump is reportedly planning to sign an executive order – possibly as soon as today – that effectively shuts down the Department of Education.
The draft order, seen by the Wall Street Journal, will direct Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take all steps permitted by law to facilitate the department’s closure. McMahon, who was confirmed as secretary Monday, sent staffers an email calling eliminating bureaucratic bloat at the department a “momentous final mission.”
Closing the department would likely require Congressional action but McMahon said during her confirmation hearing that there are plans to get Republicans, who control both chambers, on board.
