A Houston man faces up to life in prison after pleading guilty to driving the big rig that was involved in the deadly human smuggling case in 2022.

Homero Zamorano Jr. pleaded guilty on Thursday to charges of transporting aliens resulting in death, serious bodily injury, and placing lives in jeopardy.

At least 64 illegal immigrants were left inside the trailer on Quintana Road in San Antonio without water or ventilation in the summer heat, and 53 of them died. Zamorano is the third defendant to plead guilty in the mass casualty event.
