T-E-A Appoints Conservator To Oversee La Joya School District Operations

Story by TIM SULLIVAN

Ten months after putting a board of managers in place to govern the La Joya school district, the Texas Education Agency has appointed a conservator to oversee the board.

The TEA says the conservator will monitor the progress of the 7-member board, perform on-site inspections, and direct any actions deemed necessary. The TEA says the appointment of a conservator was part of the original plan to replace the La Joya ISD’s elected Board of Trustees and does not elevate the state’s intervention into the district.

The new governing board was appointed in February following a TEA investigation sparked by public corruption indictments against two La Joya school board members and three district administrators. They’d been charged with bribery, fraud, and violating conflict of interest laws.
