Story by TIM SULLIVAN

McAllen has become the third city in the Valley to try to stem what has been a proliferation of new car wash businesses. City commissioners have passed a new ordinance that says new commercial car washes must be at least a half-mile from an existing one, and more than 150 feet away from a residential area.

McAllen joins Brownsville and Edinburg in approving regulations for new car washes. However, McAllen’s distance limits aren’t as strict as the other two cities’.

Officials in Brownsville and Edinburg cited the need to conserve water in adopting their new car wash regulations, both of which require water recycling systems. McAllen’s existing car wash regulations already require those.
