The bill to create a school voucher program in Texas is on its way to Governor Greg Abbott for his signature.
On Thursday, the state Senate accepted the House’s amendments to Senate Bill 2 and sent it to the governor’s desk. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who presides over the Senate, declared, “School choice has come to Texas.”
The Senate passed a voucher bill in 2023, but it died in the House. Opponents say the billion-dollar proposal will harm public schools, especially in rural districts.
