Governor Greg Abbott has declared disaster in the Rio Grande Valley following this past week’s torrential rainfall. The declaration will help local officials more quickly respond to the flooding. Valley cities and counties issued their own declarations Friday.

The National Weather Service says Brownsville received more than five inches of rain Thursday, with McAllen picking up just under five inches. Meanwhile, Valley residents are urged to fill out a damage survey that will help the state identify where damage has occurred during the recent storms. The survey comes from the Texas Division of Emergency Management. It’s a voluntary survey and does not replace the damage reports residents must fill out for insurance.
