The Gateway International Bridge in Brownsville will be closed for a third day today due to the ongoing visit to Matamoros by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

The port of entry will be closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic until midnight. To help accommodate travelers, the Veterans International Bridge will stay open for 24 hours through midnight Monday. During what is likely his last visit to Matamoros as president, Lopez Obrador will unveil a sculpture of Catarino Garza, a Matamoros native – a journalist and revolutionary who tried to overthrow the violent dictatorship of General Porfirio Diaz in the late 1800s.

Garza also spent portions of his life in Corpus Christi and Brownsville and was outspoken against the Texas Rangers’ human rights abuses against Mexican Americans at the time.
