Ex-Police Chief To Become Cameron County Sheriff

The former police chief of the city of Primera will be the new sheriff of Cameron County. Manuel Trevino defeated the Republican candidate, Santiago “Jimmy” Manrrique, winning with 58 percent of the vote. Trevino will take over for Eric Garza who served one term as sheriff before losing to Trevino in the March primary.

Longtime Cameron County Commissioner Sofia Benavides was handily re-elected to the Place 1 seat. Benavides took 58 percent of the vote to beat Ricardo Alejandro.

Eddie Garcia will be Cameron County’s new Tax Assessor-Collector. Garcia defeated his Republican challenger Jesus Martinez with 54 percent of the vote.
