Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar is on his way to a third term after turning back a challenger in Tuesday’s election.

The Democratic incumbent faced Republican opponent Nathan Buchanan, who had the backing of Governor Greg Abbott. Salazar officially announced his reelection bid in July of last year.

Buchanan is a former Bexar County deputy and Castle Hills police officer. He picked up Abbott’s endorsement in late September. Salazar won reelection by a margin of 57-to-43 percent of the vote.
