A recent decision by Governor Abbott to accept water from the Mexican government may not provide a long-term benefit to the Rio Grande Valley.
Abbott told state water regulators on Tuesday that Texas will accept the offer of 120-thousand acre-feet of water from the Rio San Juan. But the water would enter the Rio Grande below the two reservoirs where water for agriculture is stored in the Valley.
The water also will only become available once the Texas Department of Environmental Quality finalizes the procedure for tracking where the water is used. The agency has not offered a timeline for when the water might become available for use.
