McAllen’s mayor is being criticized for his reaction to a weekend protest march. Hundreds of people joined the march on South Tenth Street on Saturday, protesting the threat of mass deportations by the Trump Administration.
Mayor Javier Villalobos took to social media on Sunday to criticize marchers for “protesting and annoying drivers,” but also called for secure borders, immigration reform and lawful use of migrant labor.
La Union del Pueblo Entero issued a statement Monday saying Villalobos belittled and shamed protesters for exercising their right to free speech. They also criticized his “profound ignorance of the real struggles and concerns happening in his own backyard.”
