The Texas Supreme Court is going to hear a case regarding a dispute between Southern Methodist University and one of the church’s governing bodies. The court announced its decision Friday, years after the United Methodist Church’s South Central Jurisdictional Conference sued SMU.
The lawsuit was over SMU’s decision to change its governing language, declaring itself to be controlled by its board and not the regional governing body. This was reportedly over the church’s decision to strengthen bans on same-sex weddings and pastors in same-sex relationships.
SMU officials have said the college is attempting to distance itself from the church over LGBTQ issues.
