A 2-vehicle crash has claimed the life of a Cameron County lawman. Precinct 1 Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia was killed when a driver plowed into the rear of his parked patrol unit on Highway 48 a little before 7 p.m. Monday.
Garcia was assisting DPS troopers with another accident near Marine Way Road, and was just about to leave when his vehicle was rear-ended by a Chevrolet Silverado. Garcia sustained life-threatening injuries and died at a hospital in Brownsville.
The pickup driver was also hospitalized with undisclosed injuries. A DPS spokeswoman says the individual is believed to have been under the influence at the time of the crash.
