Attempts To Broker Cease-Fire In Gaza
(AP) - An Israeli official says his country wants to find a diplomatic solution to the fighting with militants in Gaza -- but if that doesn't work, then he says Israel "can escalate" the fighting. He says Israel doesn't want to see a "quick fix" that will bring renewed fighting months down the road. Instead, he says, Israel wants "international guarantees" that Hamas won't rearm, and won't use Egypt's nearby Sinai peninsula for militant activity. The leader of Hamas says he won't accept any Israeli conditions -- because Israel, he says, is "the aggressor." The Turkish foreign minister and a delegation of Arab foreign ministers are expected in Gaza tomorrow as efforts continue to broker a cease-fire.
